Mini-drones with the camera: In search of the right quadrocopter, ie a drone, which also brings a camera for photo and video recordings, there are various criteria. In addition to the size, which can be interpreted quite variable with the term “mini”, the video quality and the price of the drone also play an important role. Here I have put together a few quadcopter with the camera, which convinces in terms of price, quality, and size. Of course, you do not get all three criteria at once 100% fulfilled – for example, the DJI Phantom 4 (Pro) in the higher price segment, but brings the best video quality.
Update 2017: The DJI Spark is on the market. That’s why I added a paragraph to DJI’s new little drone in this article.
Mini drone with 4K videos? At DJI it gets compact, but not mini …
As already mentioned, I would like to get rid of the DJI Phantom 4. This model with a diagonal of 35 cm (without propeller) may not be a mini-drone for some. However, it is much handier and easier to stow away or transport than, for example, the DJI Inspire 1 or DJI Inspire 2 . I would no longer call the latter a mini. Also with good (but not phantom or Inspire-good) video quality is the DJI Mavic Pro, therefore, which among the high-quality drones quite as a handy device (dimensions, collapsed: 8.3 x 8.3 x 19.8 cm) are called can. Also, I would still call the GoPro Karma here, she would not have been called back.

Update 2017: DJI Spark
The DJI Spark is a small DJI drone released in May 2017. So if you want a high-quality mini-drone with a very good camera, easy operation, gesture control and so on, then I recommend you this purchase . In the further course of this entry you will find cheaper alternatives. The lower price shows but already: somewhere are made compromises. Details about the individual mini-drones with the camera you read paragraph by paragraph. I have prepared a whole article for the DJI Spark: DJI Spark: Technical data, videos, price and more . And if you want to know how the small drone with full HD camera beats in everyday life, then I recommend you my review of DJI Spark . (Update end)
Really little mini-drones with less quality
mini-drones quadcopters, which are supposed to be really tiny, do not bring with them a towering camera, given their small size and the low price that is expected of (mostly private) users. An example would be the ON CHOICE H8C quadrocopter. The mini-drone with a 2-megapixel camera has quite good reviews on Amazon, but the image quality is only for the hobby use or for children as a toy to make flies and/or photos to practice. The size: 18 x 18 cm. Everything below includes even less resolving cameras; sometimes only 1 megapixel or even just 0.3 megapixels.
Small Selfie Drone by Zerotech: DOBBY Mini Quadcopter
Also called “the flying selfie stick”, this drone unfolds with a dimension of 13.5 x 14.5 x 3.7 cm. The Zerotech DOBBY can therefore compete with the DJI Mavic Pro, but costs 700 euros less. Nevertheless: an HD camera for 4K recordings is installed. So what’s wrong with this model? Well, the flight time, the range, the quality of the image transmission and many other specs are slimmed down a lot. Who does not want to fly too long and in relative proximity and take pictures, comes with this mini-drones quadcopter incl. Selfie mode at his expense.
- INTUITIVE G-SENSOR CONTROL: Tilt the controller to a specific direction to fly the drone.
What are FPV mini-drones? And what is a racing drone?
FPV stands for “First Person View”, a term that should be known in the field of video games. For drones, FPV provides the option of transferring the drone’s view directly to VR glasses. So you do not fly in the TPV, the “third person view” of the observer, but with a direct view from the perspective of the drone. There are some very good and fast mini-drones quadcopters, so-called racing drones in this area.
A very special drone from the FPV area is the Parrot Disco. It is an aircraft-like missile and not a quadrocopter. The mini-drones plane brings in the set the controller and the VR or FPV glasses already. Convincing I think the 1080p Full HD camera and the 45 minutes of battery life. At a maximum speed of 80 km / h, one can also speak of a racing drone. But also the Parrot Bebop 2 drone with approx. 60 km / h can be flown fast and in the FPV perspective.
- Fixed-wing drone that reaches speeds up to 50 mph
- Compact and lightweight quadcopter drone (1.1 lbs); capture high-quality pictures perfectly
Hubsan drones: no camera drone that really convinces
Admittedly, to learn to fly, the Hubsan Winzlinge seem to be good, look once the Amazon reviews through. However, the cheap and really small mini-drones of Hubsan bring either no or only a low-quality camera. Those with HD camera are then larger, more expensive, but still equipped with very simple control units. As with the previous models, which are not from DJI or other professional brands, the following applies: something is always slimmed down – either size, price or quality; sometimes two or even all three of these criteria. Hubsan drones on Amazon are here in the overview.
In short, what are the best mini-drones?
The best mini-drones quadcopters, which in terms of size, image quality and operation in each test as a winner, come from professional companies such as DJI, GoPro or maybe even Parrot. However, these drones are not for lukewarm. If you are looking for cheap quadrocopters, you need to know if you want to enjoy flying or have fun with the pictures taken. Depending on the model, the drones will attenuate some technical details – the camera, the battery life, the amount of operation, etc. Therefore, you should first determine what you want to do with the drone, and then compare the individual offers.
